Thank you Black Cloud Six. Canadians need to reach for one another in an inclusive and respectful way ; honouring our veterans is a simple first step. This might help this sense of isolation. Great article.

One of the only times I’ve read something by a veteran that makes sense to me. What a relief.

I’m a military mom and also a member of my local legion. It is alarming to me to listen to the wokeism comments coming out of the mouths of so many of my fellow members. I’m also finding that my son is beginning to lean this way after only three short years of indoctrination living on his base in the middle of our country.

Have heart. As I say in my article, there are tens of thousands of us and 90% plus are typical Canadians of all stripes. Some of the complaints have a basis in reality, but most are purely invented.

Agreed. But there are actually a helluva lot of them.

I remember telling my son before I put him on the plane for BMQ that if he came back conservative, I’d pull his eyebrows out lol. I knew even then that there was a strong tendency for this.

Soldiers are naturally conservative (small “c”) in many cases. In Canada, this is exacerbated by a tendency for governments to used the military as a means for social and managerial experimentation, all the while denying its basic raison de être. In my opinion, this tendency isn’t confined to a single party but has been worse over the past decade or so. Canadian soldiers are a cynical lot as a result. I know I am.

“Oh hey, it says here you’ve been suffering some pain and PTSD issues since leaving the service. Would you be interested in us killing you?” CAF Veterans Affairs in a nutshell…

Not quite. That’s a meme.

I have nothing but good to say about how I’ve been treated by VAC, and I’m 90% disabled. They’ve been awesome, aside from massive delays. Some people need to put down the sense of entitlement and stop fighting the system. There’s no reason why the receptionist at my local VAC office should need security glass, yet here we are.

I’m actually quite happy to hear that it’s about the same as healthcare in that it just takes a while. Fuckin gross that security glass is needed though, but from the sounds of it we might need to start armoring our Docs and nurses too.

The delays are really outrageous. VAC will take a minimum of four months to make an initial decision on a claim, a clock that starts ticking after all the hoops have been jumped through. I’ve had claims take nearly a *year* to process, and all mine were fairly simple decisions to make.

My case managers (because I’m a “complex case”) were incredible, though, and I’ve found that if one is polite and reasonable - and follows the process - help is always there.

I noticed many times over the last couple years while doing the whole hospital thing™️ that nurses, doctors, admins were almost shocked by me not being a dick and being generally positive. I always just go, “Y’all are tryin to help me, why would I get mad/be a dick/literally assault you?” And so many just have awful tales. Now mind you this is just regular healthcare in one region, but holy shit the abuse!

I’m married to an RN. She’s been assaulted, spit on, cursed out innumerable times and hounded by drug seekers in the ER, to the point where she was injured herself and had to leave. She’s just now able to go back - to cardiology.
