I really understand your sentiment Tim. I'd like to encourage all of us though to work together through our differences. And I don't mean that the bullies always get their way. But really it seems to me that in much of the world and in Canada more and more we have given up our greatest gift which is to educate ourselves and discuss with our friends and neighbors.
As an American the only way I want to be on Canadian soil is as a tourist. I grew up in a border state and would prefer we keep good relations as we have in the past century.
As you know, Americans believed they would be welcomed as liberators in 1775 and 1812, too. British regulars and Canadian militia showed them how wrong they were.
Interesting how he says the quiet part out loud, though: the only way that “right wing” (as opposed to centre-right) governments are elected is by limiting choice to the extremes.
Our president-elect is an incompetent monster. Under rules for apportionment of seats in the US House of Representatives, Canada would be entitled to more seats than California has if it were admitted as a single new state. Since the size of the House is fixed at 435 we would actually see seats taken away from other states to allow for seating such a tremendous notional 51st state.
The man is nuts and my countrymen still voted for him. I know people are looking forward to the country’s 250th birthday in 2026 but it just feels like we’re going to have a rocky rough road to it.
What worries me most is that Trump and his administration are being filled with Putin’s assets. They (Russia) admittedly interfered with the presidential election. They (Russia) are currently cutting communications in EU (allegedly) and on and on.
I fear we’re going to be living through some version of Red Dawn on a global scale. I try not to go all tinfoil hat, but having Muskovich’s satellites globally doesn’t comfort me either.
So, it’s not Trump I’m worried about. It’s his handlers. Him and his “team” couldn’t even create an AI image with Trump in Canada instead of Switzerland.
I was aghast that Canada’s Ambassador would after having watched Trump for the last 8 years, would even contemplate what he said was a joke! Anyone with brains who has paid any attention at all would know that Trump doesn’t tell jokes because he has NO sense of humour!
My family has been in Canada since 1730 and we fought in every war that Canada before and after Confederation has been involved in. We weren’t warriors, just average folks, but we’ve got a street named after us for holding off the Americans at the Battle of Stoney Creek and I know we’d all take up arms again to stop the Americans from taking over our country. And we know EXACTLY what to do with those traitorous Canadians who would sell us out!
I really hate seeing come alive what I've been saying since Drumpf's first reign of clownfuckery. I'm disgusted at Trudeau's appearannce of kowtowing to him, and livid that a single person in that room dared to laugh, however "nervously" at Drumpf's so-called "joke". My MAGA father's always on my ass with "what do you care who's president, you live in Canada". Well, Dad, this. THIS is why I care. And as for this 51st state "joke", this is my I'm not laughing face. 🖕🤨🖕

Then, sad to say, but the reality is, the US MAGAs are “them”. There is no other word, no other descriptor, no other meaning…US MAGAS are them, not us.
I would suggest that the US be proclaimed Canada’s 13th Province, but we can’t afford the problems. However I would welcome Hawaii and Puerto Rico applications for inclusion. We should conduct a national referendum on the topic.
People -- You are being Half-Trolled again. Can you not sense that from the immediate indignity and outrage you feel? The real insult is the attitude behind Trump's and others' remarks, that Canada is a vassal-state-in-waiting. Our socio-economic-political system is far more enviable. We also belong to a Commonwealth of nations and to NATO. So, we are no walkover ... calm yourselves.
It’s the “half” trolled that you have right. There’s no explicit threat, of course. However, our alliances would mean precisely zero should the US decide that they’d had enough of Canada. The US has far too much reach and power; any US takeover would be essentially bloodless.
The problem is that we’re seeing these “jokes” more and more and it is a serious point of view within MAGA’s right wing. I guarantee that Trump’s Sec Def pic would be all over taking over Canada.
I think it's called "a reverse take-over". But few of us are (or could be) convinced that it would be worth it ... although with climate change, it may be the only way to keep the planet habitable for humans.
This is Trump’s usual play. He says something absolutely outrageous, like a baby throwing his bottle and toys out of his crib, then he watches the adults try to make sense of nonsense. He’s done this all his life.
This is all enraging and worrying. But I'm sure that Trump has enough expat Canadians in his orbit to know that comments like this are perfect to troll us. Anytime Americans notice us, good or bad, we're all over it. And trolling is what they're all about.
I'm sure many will comment on this fuck'n idea, but as a Canadian I want no part of the US on our soil!
There are tons of maple MAGAts in Alberta and Saskatchewan. If they have such a hard on for America, they can move there.

I have family in the States, love visiting the US.. I didn't mean I didn't want US citizens here!, just that big orange fella and his friends
Are. Not. Welcome!

There would probably be a war if that orange man really wanted Canada. And Canada would fight!
We would never give up what we have.. free health care is a biggie!
Do you know about healthcare in other countries?.. Britain! France! Etc! Watch Michael Moore's movie "Sicko" if not.
I don't think it will be the celebration everyone is counting on. I hope I'm wrong though because it should build some bridges and communication.

Oh we Canadians have skin in the game, alright. Much of my family are in the US too. All MAGA.
Ugh. My condolences.
Me too - it definitely makes us less likely to think of “us” and “them” when some of us is literally them!
No, we are not. We are Canadians, or we are US citizens. It is, in these days that simple. You are either for Canada, or you are not.
Then, sad to say, but the reality is, the US MAGAs are “them”. There is no other word, no other descriptor, no other meaning…US MAGAS are them, not us.
We’ve got the big faucet. More comments like that and we’ll turn it off.
And then we’ll come down and burn their precious White House to the ground… again!
To quote Love Actually’s PM (Hugh Grant):
https://youtu.be/D6ouyeycWk8?feature=shared
I’ve seen this movie several times and never thought to relate Grant’s speech to the current situation.
It’s bang on and sums my attitude up perfectly.
Thanks for sharing!
Hugh Grant's PM was exactly right to rebuff American arrogance.
“A friend who bullies us is no longer our friend” - says it all
.. ‘goads .. while running one’s mouth .. 🦎🏴☠️🧨
Good one Murray!
I had just rewatched this film, a Christmas tradition in spite of its flaws, and this clip came immediately to mind.
I’ll fight with Canada. Fuck these immoral Republican bastards.
I would suggest that the US be proclaimed Canada’s 13th Province, but we can’t afford the problems. However I would welcome Hawaii and Puerto Rico applications for inclusion. We should conduct a national referendum on the topic.
I am embarrassed to be an American at the moment.

So, I agree, it isn’t serious. Yet.
But, it is serious, not a joke, despite some premier’s comments
If Canada were to become a state it would have 58 congressional seats and a Republican wouldn’t be elected to the presidency in a hundred years.
I think it's called "a reverse take-over". But few of us are (or could be) convinced that it would be worth it ... although with climate change, it may be the only way to keep the planet habitable for humans.
The “Truth Social” post got me to use a f(bomb) for the first time in a long time. Sharpening my pitch fork.

Oh God that representation of Trump next to our flag...at the very precipice of a steep, deep chasm. I so want to reach out to him, very strongly.
